Shawwal

The tenth month of the Islamic calendar, beginning with the joyous occasion of Eid al-Fitr — the Festival of Breaking the Fast. Shawwal also marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s.), the sixth Imam, who was poisoned on the 25th of this month in 148 AH.

1st of Shawwal — Eid al-Fitr (Shab)

The night of Eid al-Fitr (the first night of Shawwal) is one of the four greatest nights of the year — comparable in blessing to Laylat al-Qadr according to some narrations. It is a night of intense worship, dua, takbir, and seeking forgiveness.

Ghusl at Sunset

Perform Ghusl (ritual bath) at sunset at the beginning of Eid night.

Spend the Night in Worship

Spend the entire night engaged in: 1. Offering prayers (nawafil) 2. Reciting supplications and duas 3. Seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) 4. Staying in mosques It has been narrated that this night is not less in blessing than Laylat al-Qadr.

Takbir of Eid

After the obligatory Maghrib Prayer, Isha Prayer, Fajr Prayer, and the Eid Prayer on the following day, recite the Takbir of Eid:

Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallahu wallahu akbar, Allahu akbar wa lillahil hamd, alhamdu lillahi ala ma hadana wa lahush shukru ala ma awlana

Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest, and all praise belongs to Allah. Praise be to Allah for the guidance He bestowed upon us, and thanks to Him for the favors He granted us.

Dua After Maghrib (Raise Hands)

After completing the Maghrib obligatory and supererogatory prayers, raise your hands towards the sky and recite: {{arabic}} Then prostrate and repeat the following one hundred times: يَا ذَا الْحَوْلِ — Tubu ilallah (I repent to Allah) Then pray to Allah for all your needs — they will be granted by His permission.

O Possessor of Favors and Bounties, O Possessor of Generosity, O He Who chose Muhammad as His helper — send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and forgive me every sin You have recorded, which is with You in a clear book.

Prostration Dua — Shaykh al-Tusi (After Maghrib & Isha)

According to the narration of Shaykh al-Tusi, it is recommended to prostrate after both the Maghrib and the Isha Prayers on this night and recite: {{arabic}} Then repeat the following one hundred times: تُوبُ اِلَى اللهِ — Tubu ilallah (I repent to Allah)

O Possessor of Power, O Possessor of Bounty, O He Who chose Muhammad as His helper — send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and forgive me every sin I have committed and forgotten, which is with You in a clear book.

Visit the Tomb of Imam Hussain (a.s.)

It is highly recommended to visit the holy tomb of Imam Hussain (a.s.) on this night, for it carries a tremendous reward. For those unable to travel to Karbala, recite the Ziyarat from a distance: [Ziyarat Imam Hussain (a.s.) — Ramadan & Eid](dua://ziyarat-imam-hussain-laylat-ul-qadr-eid)

Sixth: Supplication

It is recommended to repeat a specific supplicatory prayer ten times on this night. This supplication has been cited within the devotional acts of Friday nights (Laylat al-Jumu'ah) in Mafatih al-Jinan — refer to the Friday night section for its full text.

Seventh: Ten-Unit Prayer

It is recommended to offer the ten-unit prayer that was mentioned within the devotional acts of the last night of Ramadan (Laylat al-Khatm) in Mafatih al-Jinan — refer to the Ramadan last night section for its method and structure.

Eighth: Two-Unit Prayer (Fatihah + Tawhid)

Offer a 2-unit prayer: 1. Unit one: [Surah al-Fatihah](surah://1) once + [Surah al-Tawhid](surah://112) one thousand times 2. Unit two: [Surah al-Fatihah](surah://1) once + [Surah al-Tawhid](surah://112) once After completing the prayer, prostrate and recite: {{arabic}} Then pray to Allah for your personal needs. Imam Ali (a.s.) said: 'By Him Who holds my soul, Allah shall definitely respond to whoever offers this prayer and prays for his needs, and shall forgive him even if his sins were as numerous as the pebbles of deserts.' Note: According to another narration, Surah al-Tawhid may be recited one hundred times (not one thousand) in the first unit, and this version is offered after the Maghrib obligatory and supererogatory prayers.

O Possessor of Favour, Generosity, and Bounty, O He Who chose Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) — send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and do such-and-such for me. (Then state your personal needs.)

Dua of Allah's Beautiful Names (Shaykh al-Tusi / Ibn Tawus)

After completing the two-unit prayer, Shaykh al-Tusi and Sayyid Ibn Tawus both record that the following supplicatory prayer — a litany of Allah's beautiful names — should be recited: {{arabic}} Then prostrate and say the prostration dua (next item).

O Allah, O Allah, O Allah. O Most Merciful, O Allah. O Most Compassionate, O Allah. O Sovereign, O Allah. O Most Holy, O Allah. O Source of Peace, O Allah. O Granter of Security, O Allah. O Guardian, O Allah. O Almighty, O Allah. O Compeller, O Allah. O Supremely Great, O Allah... [continuing through all the beautiful names of Allah] ...I ask You to send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, to bestow Your pleasure upon me, to pardon me with Your forbearance, and to expand for me my lawful and good provision from where I expect it and from where I do not expect it. For I am Your servant and there is none besides You and none other than You that I ask. O Most Merciful of the merciful — as Allah wills; there is no power except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.

Prostration Dua After the Names Prayer

After completing the dua of Allah's names, prostrate and recite:

O Sender down of blessings — through You every need is fulfilled. I ask You, O Lord, O Lord, O Lord, O Allah, O Allah, O Allah — by every name stored in the unseen with You, and by the well-known names recorded on the canopy of Your Throne — that You send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, that You accept from me the month of Ramadan, that You write me among those who come to Your Sacred House, that You pardon me for my grave sins, and that You bring forth for me, O Lord, Your treasures — O Most Merciful.

1st of Shawwal — Eid al-Fitr (Day)

Eid al-Fitr is one of the two great Eids of Islam — a day of celebration, gratitude, and worship marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Mafatih al-Jinan details the Ghusl, Zakat al-Fitrah, the Eid Prayer, and special duas for this blessed day.

Zakat al-Fitrah (Obligatory)

Paying Zakat al-Fitrah before the Eid Prayer is obligatory. It must be paid as one sa' (approximately 3 kg) of staple food (wheat, barley, dates, etc.) or its monetary equivalent, for each member of the household. The acceptance of one's fasting in Ramadan is dependent upon the payment of this alms. It also serves as a security against death until the following year. The Quran mentions Zakat before prayer: "He indeed shall be successful who pays Zakat, magnifies the name of his Lord, and prays." (87:14-15)

Ghusl of Eid

Perform Ghusl (ritual bath) between dawn and the Eid Prayer. It is preferable to bathe in a river if possible. When beginning the Ghusl, recite the following intention: {{arabic}} After completing the Ghusl, recite: {{arabic}}

Allahumma imanan bika wa tasdiqan bikitabika wattiba'a sunnati nabiyyika Muhammadin sallallahu alayhi wa alih|||Allahumma aj'alhu kaffaran li-dhunubi, Allahumma adhhib anni al-danas wa tahhir dini

O Allah, (I perform this Ghusl) out of faith in You, affirmation of Your Book, and following the Sunnah of Your Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).|||O Allah, make this an expiation for my sins. O Allah, remove the filth from me and purify my religion.

Preparation for Eid

On the morning of Eid al-Fitr: 1. Put on your best and cleanest clothes 2. Apply perfume 3. Eat something before the Eid Prayer to break your fast — preferably dates or something sweet. Shaykh al-Mufid (r.a.) mentions it is also advisable to consume a small piece of the soil (turbah) of Imam Hussain's (a.s.) tomb, as it is a remedy for all illnesses. 4. Do not leave for the Eid Prayer before sunrise 5. It is recommended to offer the Eid Prayer in an open field (not inside a mosque), except in Makkah 6. When returning from the prayer, take a different route from the one you came by

Dua When Setting Out for Eid Prayer

When readying yourself to go to the Eid Prayer, recite the following supplication reported by Abu Hamzah al-Thumali from Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.):

O Allah, whoever prepares on this day, or equips himself, or readies and makes himself ready to proceed to a creature in hope of his grant, seeking his voluntary gifts, benefits, and favors — then verily, O my Master, it is to You that I prepare, equip, and ready myself. I have come forth to one of the Eids of the Ummah of Your Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), humble, submissive, confessing my sins and ill treatment toward myself. I do not turn to any creature in whom I place hope, nor do I put any creature forward — but I have come to You, O Great, O Great, O Great. So forgive me the grave of my sins, for none forgives the grave sins except You. O there is no god but You, the Most Merciful of the merciful.

Eid Prayer (Salat al-Eid)

A 2-rakat prayer performed on both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, featuring 9 additional takbirs each followed by the Eid Qunut supplication. Prayed in an open field, directly on the ground. [Eid Prayer — Step-by-Step Guide](salah://eid-prayer)

Visit Imam Hussain (a.s.) & Dua al-Nudbah

On the Day of Eid al-Fitr: 1. It is recommended to visit the holy tomb of Imam Hussain (a.s.) — either in person or through Ziyarat recited from a distance. 2. Recite [Dua al-Nudbah](dua://dua-nudbah), which is especially recommended on all four Eids (Fitr, Adha, Ghadir, and Friday). After reciting it, prostrate and say: {{arabic}} 3. Then place your right cheek on the ground and say a dua of humility. 4. Return to prostration and repeat the following one hundred times: {{arabic}}

I seek refuge in You from a fire whose heat is never extinguished, whose newness never wears away, and whose thirst is never quenched.|||Pardon, (O Allah), pardon.
