Munajaat 2: Al-Shakeen (Complainers)
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
bismillahi alrrahmani alrrahimi
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful
إِلٰهِي إِلَيْكَ أَشْكُو نَفْساً
ilahi ilayka ashku nafsan
My God, to You I complain of a soul
بِٱلسُّوءِ أَمَّارَةً
bissu'i ammaratan
commanding to evil,
وَإِلَىٰ ٱلْخَطِيئَةِ مُبَادِرَةً
wa ila alkhati'ati mubadiratan
rushing to offenses,
وَبِمَعَاصِيكَ مُولَعَةً
wa bima`asika mula`atan
eager to disobey You,
وَلِسَخَطِكَ مُتَعَرِّضَةً
wa lisakhatika muta`arridatan
and exposing itself to Your anger.
تَسْلُكَ بِي مَسَالِكَ ٱلْمَهَالِكِ
tasluka bi masalika almahaliki
It takes me on the roads of disasters,
وَتَجْعَلُنِي عِنْدَكَ أَهْوَنَ هَالِكٍ
wa taj`aluni `indaka ahwana halikin
it makes me the easiest of perishing ones before You;
كَثيرَةَ ٱلْعِلَلِ
kathirata al`ilali
many its pretexts,
طَويلَةَ ٱل أَمَلِ
tawilata al-amali
drawn out its expectations;
إِنْ مَسَّهَا ٱلشَّرُّ تَجْزَعْ
in massaha ashsharru tajza`u
when evil touches it, it is anxious,
وَإِنْ مَسَّهَا ٱلْخَيْرُ تَمْنَعْ
wa in massaha alkhayru tamna`u
when good touches it, grudging;
مَيَّالَةً إِلَىٰ ٱللَّعِبِ وَٱللَّهْوِ
mayyalatan ila alla`ibi wallahwi
inclining to sport and diversion,
مَمْلُوءَةً بِٱلْغَفْلَةِ وَٱلسَّهْوِ
mamlu'atan bilghaflati wassahwi
full of heedlessness and inattention,
تُسْرِعُ بِي إِلَىٰ ٱلْحَوْبَةِ
tusri`u bi ila alhawbati
it hurries me to misdeeds
وَتُسَوِّفُنِي بِٱلتَّوْبَةِ
wa tusawwifuni bittawbati
and makes me delay repentance.
إِلٰهِي أَشْكُو إِلَيْكَ
ilahi ashku ilayka
My God, I complain to You
عَدُوّاً يُضِلُّنِي
`aduwwan yudilluni
of an enemy who misguides me
وَشَيْطَاناً يُغْوينِي
wa shaytanan yughwini
and a devil who leads me astray.
قَدْ مَلأَ بِٱلْوَسْوَاسِ صَدْرِي
qad mala'a bilwaswasi sadri
He has filled my breast with tempting thoughts,
وَأَحَاطَتْ هَوَاجِسُهُ بِقَلْبِي
wa ahatat hawajisuhu biqalbi
and his suggestions have encompassed my heart.
يُعَاضِدُ لِيَ ٱلْهَوَىٰ
yu`adidu liya alhawa
He supports caprice against me,
وَيُزَيِّنُ لِي حُبَّ ٱلدُّنْيَا
wa yuzayyinu li hubba addunya
embellishes for me the love of this world,
وَيَحُولُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ ٱلطَّاعَةِ وَٱلزُّلْفَىٰ
wa yahulu bayni wa bayna atta`ati wazzulfa
and separates me from obedience and proximity!
إِلٰهِي إِلَيْكَ أَشْكُو
ilahi ilayka ashku
My God, to You I complain
قَلْباً قَاسِياً
qalban qasiyan
of a heart that is hard,
مَعَ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ مُتَقَلِّباً
ma`a alwaswasi mutaqalliban
turned this way and that by tempting thoughts,
وَبِٱلرَّيْنِ وَٱلطَّبْعِ مُتَلَبِّساً
wa birrayni wattab`i mutalabbisan
clothed in rust and the seal,
وَعَيْناً عَنِ ٱلْبُكَاءِ مِنْ خَوْفِكَ جَامِدَةً
wa `aynan `an albuka'i min khawfika jamidatan
and of an eye too indifferent to weep in fear of You
وَإِلَىٰ مَا تَسُرُّهَا طَامِحَةً
wa ila ma tasurruha tamihatan
and eagerly seeking that which gladdens it!
إِلٰهِي لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِقُدْرَتِكَ
ilahi la hawla wa la quwwata illa biqudratika
My God, there is no force and no strength except in Your power,
وَلاَ نَجَاةَ لِي مِنْ مَكَارِهِ ٱلدُّنْيَا إِلاَّ بِعِصْمَتِكَ
wa la najata li min makarihi addunya illa bi`ismatika
and no deliverance for me from the detested things of this world save through Your preservation.
فَأَسْأَلُكَ بِبَلاغَةِ حِكْمَتِكَ
fa as'aluka bibalaghati hikmatika
So I ask You by Your far-reaching wisdom
وَنَفَاذِ مَشِيَّتِكَ
wa nafadhi mashiyyatika
and Your penetrating will
أَنْ لاَ تَجْعَلْنِي لِغَيْرِ جُودِكَ مُتَعَرِّضاً
an la taj`alni lighayri judika muta`arridan
not to let me expose myself to other than Your munificence
وَلاَ تُصَيِّرْنِي لِلْفِتَنِ غَرَضاً
wa la tusayyirni lilfitani gharadan
and not to turn me into a target for trials!
وَكُنْ لِي عَلَىٰ ٱلأَعْدَاءِ نَاصِراً
wa kun li `ala al-a`da'i nasiran
Be for me a helper against enemies,
وَعَلَىٰ ٱلْمَخَازِي وَٱلْعُيُوبِ سَاتِراً
wa `ala almakhazi wal`uyubi satiran
a coverer of shameful things and faults,
وَمِنَ ٱلْبَلايَا وَاقِياً
wa min albalaya waqiyan
a protector against afflictions,
وَعَنِ ٱلْمَعَاصِي عَاصِماً
wa `an alma`asi ` asiman
a preserver against acts of disobedience!
بِرَأْفَتِكَ وَرَحْمَتِكَ
bira'fatika wa rahmatika
By Your clemency and mercy,
يَا أَرْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ
ya arhama arrahimina
O Most Merciful of the merciful!
