Munajaat 3: Al-Khaifeen (The Fearful)

Munajat

1. بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرّحِيمِ

   bismillahi alrrahmani alrrahimi

   In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

2. إِلٰهِي أَتَرَاكَ بَعْدَ ٱلْإِيـمَانِ بِكَ تُعَذِّبُنِي

   ilahi ataraka ba`da al-imani bika tuaadhdhibuni

   My God, will You chastise me after my faith in You,

3. أَمْ بَعْدَ حُبِّي إِيَّاكَ تُبَعِّدُنِي

   am ba`da hubbi iyyaka tuba``iduni

   drive me far away after my love for You,

4. أَمْ مَعَ رَجَائِي لِرَحْمَتِكَ وَصَفْحِكَ تَحْرِمُنِي

   am ma`a raja'i lirahmatika wa safhika tahrimuni

   deprive me while I hope for Your mercy and forgiveness,

5. أَمْ مَعَ ٱسْتِجَارَتِي بِعَفْوِكَ تُسْلِمُنِي

   am ma`a istijarati bi`afwika tuslimuni

   forsake me while I seek sanctuary in Your pardon?

6. حَاشَا لِوَجْهِكَ ٱلْكَرِيمِ أَنْ تُخَيِّبَنِي

   hasha liwajhika alkarimi an tukhayyibani

   Far it be from Your generous face to disappoint me?

7. لَيْتَ شِعْرِي! أَلِلشَّقَاءِ وَلَدَتْنِي أُمِّي

   layta shi`ri alishshaqa'i waladatni ummi

   Would that I knew—Did my mother bear me for wretchedness?

8. أَمْ لِلْعَنَاءِ رَبَّتْنِي

   am lil`ana'i rabbatni

   Did she nurture me for suffering?

9. فَلَيْتَهَا لَمْ تَلِدْنِي وَلَمْ تُرَبِّنِي

   falaytaha lam talidni wa lam turabbini

   Would then that she had not borne me and had not nurtured me!

10. وَلَيْتَنِي عَلِمْتُ

    wa laytani `alimtu

    Would that I had knowledge—

11. أَمِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلسَّعادَةِ جَعَلْتَنِي

    amin ahli assa`adati ja`altani

    Have You appointed me one of the people of felicity?

12. وَبِقُرْبِكَ وَجِوَارِكَ خَصَصْتَنِي

    wa biqurbika wa jiwarika khasastani

    Have You singled me out for Your nearness and neighborhood?

13. فَتَقَرَّ بِذٰلِكَ عَيْنِي

    fataqarra bidhalika `ayni

    Then would my eyes be gladdened,

14. وَتَطْمَئِنَّ لَهُ نَفْسِي

    wa tatma'inna lahu nafsi

    and in that my soul reach serenity.

15. إِلٰهِي هَلْ تُسَوِّدُ وُجُوهاً خَرَّتْ سَاجِدَةً لِعَظَمَتِكَ

    ilahi hal tusawwidu wujuhan kharrat sajidatan li`azamatika

    My God, do You blacken faces which fall down in prostration before Your mightiness?

16. أَوْ تُخْرِسُ أَلْسِنَةً نَطَقَتْ بِٱلثَّنَاءِ عَلَىٰ مَجْدِكَ وَجَلاَلَتِكَ

    aw tukhrisu alsinatan nataqat biththana'i `ala majdika wa jalalatika

    Do You strike dumb tongues which speak in laudation of Your glory and majesty?

17. أَوْ تَطْبَعُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبٍ ٱنْطَوَتْ عَلَىٰ مَحَبَّتِكَ

    aw tatba`u `ala qulubin intawat `ala mahabbatika

    Do You seal hearts which harbor Your love?

18. أَوْ تُصِمُّ أَسْمَاعاً تَلَذَّذَتْ بِسَمَاعِ ذِكْرِكَ فِي إِرَادَتِكَ

    aw tusimmu asma`an taladhdhadhat bisama`i dhikrika fi iradatika

    Do You deafen ears which take pleasure in hearing Your remembrance according to Your will?

19. أَوْ تَغُلُّ أَكُفّاً رَفَعَتْهَا الآمَالُ إِلَيْكَ رَجَاءَ رَأْفَتِكَ

    aw taghullu akuffan rafa`at-ha al-amalu ilayka raja'a ra'fatika

    Do You manacle hands which expectations have raised to You in hope of Your clemency?

20. أَوْ تُعَاقِبُ أَبْدَاناً عَمِلَتْ بِطَاعَتِكَ حَتَّىٰ نَحِلَتْ فِي مُجَاهَدَتِكَ

    aw tu`aqibu abdanan `amilat bita`atika hatta nahilat fi mujahadatika

    Do You punish bodies which worked to obey You until they grew thin in struggling for You?

21. أَوْ تُعَذِّبُ أَرْجُلاً سَعَتْ فِي عِبَادَتِكَ

    aw tu`dhdhibu arjulan sa`at fi `ibadatika

    Do You chastise legs which ran to worship You?

22. إِلٰهِي لاَ تُغْلِقْ عَلَىٰ مُوَحِّدِيكَ أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

    ilahi la tughliq `ala muwahhidika abwaba rahmatika

    My God, lock not toward those who profess Your Unity the doors of Your mercy,

23. وَلاَ تحْجُبْ مُشْتَاقِيكَ عَنِ ٱلنَّظَرِ إِلَىٰ جَمِيلِ رُؤْيَتِكَ

    wa la tahjub mushtaqika `an annazari ila jamili ru'yatika

    and veil not those who yearn for You from looking upon the vision of Your beauty!

24. إِلٰهِي نَفْسٌ أَعْزَزْتَهَا بِتَوحِيدِكَ

    ilahi nafsun a`zaztaha bitawhidika

    My God, a soul which You have exalted by its professing Your Unity—

25. كَيْفَ تُذِلُّهَا بِمَهَانَةِ هِجْرَانِكَ

    kayfa tudhilluha bimahanati hijranika

    how will You humiliate him by leaving him?

26. وَضَمِيرٌ ٱنْعَقَدَ عَلَىٰ مَوَدَّتِكَ

    wa damirun in`aqada `ala mawaddatika

    My God, a heart which has been knotted by its love for Your—

27. كَيْفَ تُحْرِقُهُ بِحَرَارَةِ نِيرَانِكَ

    kayfa tuhriquhu bihararati niranika

    how will You burn it in the heat of Your fires?

28. إِلٰهِي أَجِرْنِي مِنَ أَلِيمِ غَضَبِكَ

    ilahi ajirni min alimi ghadabika

    My God, give me sanctuary from Your painful wrath

29. وَعَظِيمِ سَخَطِكَ

    wa `azimi sakhatika

    and Your mighty anger!

30. يَا حَنَّانُ يَا مَنَّانُ

    ya hannanu ya mannanu

    O All-loving, O All-kind!

31. يَا رَحِيمُ يَا رَحْمٰنُ

    ya rahimu ya rahmanu

    O Compassionate, O Merciful!

32. يَا جَبَّارُ يَا قَهَّارُ

    ya jabbaru ya qahharu

    O Compeller, O Subduer!

33. يَا غَفَّارُ يَا سَتَّارُ

    ya ghaffaru ya sattaru

    O All-forgiver, O All-covering!

34. نَجِّنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلنَّارِ

    najjini birahmatika min `adhabi annari

    Deliver me through Your mercy from the chastisement of the Fire

35. وَفَضِيحَةِ ٱلْعَارِ

    wa fadihati al`ari

    and the disgrace of shame

36. إِذَا ٱمْتَازَ ٱلأَخْيَارُ مِنَ ٱلأَشْرَارِ

    idha imtaza al-akhyaru min al-ashraru

    when the good are set apart from the evil,

37. وَحَالَتِ ٱلأَحْوَالُ

    wa halat al-ahwalu

    forms are transformed,

38. وَهَالَتِ ٱلأَهْوَالُ

    wa halat al-ahwalu

    terrors terrify,

39. وَقَرُبَ ٱلْمُحْسِنُونَ

    wa qaruba almuhsinuna

    the good-doers are brought near,

40. وَبَعُدَ ٱلْمُسِيئُونَ

    wa ba`uda almusi'una

    the evildoers taken far,

41. (وَوُفِّيَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَا كَسَبَتْ

    wa wuffiyat kullu nafsin ma kasabat

    “and every soul paid what it has earned,

42. وَهُمْ لاَ يُظْلَمُونَ)

    wa hum la yuzlamuna

    and they shall not be wronged!”
