Munajaat 6: Al-Shakireen (The Thankful)
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرّحْمَانِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
bismillahi arrhmani arrahimi
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful
إِلٰهِي أَذْهَلَنِي عَنْ إِقَامَةِ شُكْرِكَ تَتَابُعُ طَوْلِكَ
ilahi adhhalani `an iqamati shukrika tatabu`u tawlika
My God, the uninterrupted flow of Your graciousness hast distracted me from thanking You!
وَأَعْجَزَنِي عَنْ إِحْصَاءِ ثَنَائِكَ فَيْضُ فَضْلِكَ
wa a`jazani `an ihsa'i thana'ika faydu fadlika
The flood of Your bounty has rendered me incapable of counting Your praises!
وَشَغَلَنِي عَنْ ذِكْرِ مَحَامِدِكَ تَرَادُفُ عَوَائِدِكَ
wa shaghalani `an dhikri mahamidika taradufu `awa'idika
The succession of Your kind acts has diverted me from mentioning You in laudation!
وَأَعْيَانِي عَنْ نَشْرِ عَوَارِفِكَ تَوَالِي أَيَادِيكَ
wa a`yani `an nashri `awarifika tawali ayadika
The continuous rush of Your benefits has thwarted me from spreading the news of Your gentle favors!
وَهٰذَا مَقَامُ مَنِ ٱعْتَرَفَ بِسُبُوغِ النَّعْمَاءِ
wa hadha maqamu man i`tarafa bisubughi anna`ma'i
This is the station of him who confesses to the lavishness of favors,
وَقَابَلَهَا بِٱلتَّقْصِيرِ
wa qabalaha bittaqsiri
meets them with shortcomings,
وَشَهِدَ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بِٱلإِهْمَالِ وَٱلتَّضْيِيعِ
wa shahida `ala nafsihi bil-ihmali wattadyi`i
and witnesses to his own disregard and negligence.
وَأَنْتَ ٱلرَّءُوفُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
wa anta arra'ufu arrahimu
You are the Clement, the Compassionate,
ٱلْبَرُّ ٱلْكَرِيمُ
albarru alkarimu
the Good, the Generous,
ٱلَّذِي لاَ يُخَيِّبُ قَاصِدِيهِ
alladhi la yukhayyibu qasidihi
who does not disappoint those who aim for Him,
وَلاَ يَطْرُدُ عَنْ فِنَائِهِ آمِلِيهِ
wa la yatrudu `an fina'ihi amilihi
nor cast out from His courtyard those who expect from Him!
بِسَاحَتِكَ تَحُطُّ رِحَالُ ٱلرَّاجِينَ
bisahatika tahuttu rihalu arrajina
In Your yard are put down the saddlebags of the hopeful
وَبِعَرْصَتِكَ تَقِفُ آمَالُ ٱلْمُسْتَرْفِدِينَ
wa bi`arsatika taqifu amalu almustarfidina
and in Your plain stand the hopes of the help-seekers!
فَلاَ تُقَابِلْ آمَالَنَا بِٱلتَّخْيِيبِ وَٱلإِيَاسِ
fala tuqabil amalana bittakhyibi wal-iyasi
So, meet not our hopes by disappointing and disheartening
وَلاَ تُلْبِسْنَا سِرْبَالَ ٱلْقُنُوطِ وَٱلإِبْلاَسِ
wa la tulbisna sirbala alqunuti wal-iblasi
and clothe us not in the shirt of despair and despondency!
إِلٰهِي تَصَاغَرَ عِنْدَ تَعَاظُمِ آلائِكَ شُكْرِي
ilahi tasaghara `inda ta`azumi ala'ika shukri
My God, my thanksgiving is small before Your great boons,
وَتَضَاءَلَ فِي جَنْبِ إِكْرَامِكَ إِيَّايَ ثَنَائِي وَنَشْرِي
wa tada'ala fi janbi ikramika iyyaya thana'i wa nashri
and my praise and news-spreading shrink beside Your generosity toward me!
جَلَّلَتْنِي نِعَمُكَ مِنْ أَنْوَارِ الإِيـمَانِ حُلَلاً
jallalatni ni`amuka min anwari al-imani hulalan
Your favors have wrapped me in the robes of the lights of faith,
وَضَرَبَتْ عَلَيَّ لَطَائِفُ بِرِّكَ مِنَ ٱلْعِزِّ كِلَلاً
wa darabat `alayya lata'ifu birrika min al`izzi kilalan
and the gentleness of Your goodness have let down over me delicate curtains of might!
وَقَلَّدَتْنِي مِنَنُكَ قَلائِدَ لاَ تُحَلُّ
wa qalladatni minanuka qala'ida la tuhallu
Your kindnesses have collared me with collars not to be moved
وَطَوَّقَتْنِي أَطْوَاقاً لاَ تُفَلُّ
wa tawwaqatni atwaqan la tufallu
and adorned me with neck-rings not to be broken!
فَآلاَؤُكَ جَمَّةٌ
fa ala'uka jammatun
Your boons are abundant;
ضَعُفَ لِسَانِي عَنْ إِحْصَائِهَا
da`ufa lisani `an ihsa'iha
my tongue is too weak to count them!
وَنَعْمَاؤُكَ كَثِيرَةٌ
wa na`ma'uka kathiratun
Your favors are many;
قَصُرَ فَهْمِي عَنْ إِدْرَاكِهَا
qasura fahmi `an idrakiha
my understanding falls short of grasping them,
فَضْلاً عَنِ ٱسْتِقْصَائِهَا
fadlan `an istiqsa'iha
not to speak of exhausting them!
فَكَيْفَ لِي بِتَحْصِيلِ ٱلشُّكْرِ
fakayfa li bitahsili ashshukri
So, how can I achieve thanksgiving?
وَشُكرِي إِيَّاكَ يَفْتَقِرُ إِلَىٰ شُكْرٍ
wa shukri iyyaka yaftaqiru ila shukrin
For my thanking You requires thanksgiving.
فَكُلَّمَا قُلْتُ لَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ
fakullama qultu laka alhamdu
Whenever I say, ‘To You belongs praise!’
وَجَبَ عَلَيَّ لِذٰلِكَ أَنْ أَقولَ لَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ
wajaba `alayya lidhalika an aqula laka alhamdu
it becomes thereby incumbent upon me to say, ‘To You belongs praise!’
إِلٰهِي فَكَمَا غَذَّيْتَنَا بِلُطْفِكَ
ilahi fakama ghadhdhaytana bilutfika
My God, as You have fed us through Your gentleness
وَرَبَّيْتَنَا بِصُنْعِكَ
wa rabbaytana bisun`ika
and nurtured us through Your benefaction,
فَتَمِّمْ عَلَيْنَا سَوَابِغَ ٱلنِّعَمِ
fatammim `alayna sawabigha anni`ami
so also complete for us lavish favors,
وَٱدْفَعْ عَنَّا مَكَارِهَ ٱلنِّقَمِ
wadfa` `anna makariha anniqami
repel from us detested acts of vengeance,
وَآتِنَا مِنْ حُظُوظِ ٱلدَّارَيْنِ
wa atina min huzuzi addarayni
and of the shares of the two abodes,
أَرْفَعَهَا وَ جَلَّهَا عَاجِلاً وَآجِلاً
arfa`aha wa ajallaha `ajilan wa ajilan
give us their most elevated and their greatest, both the immediate and the deferred!
وَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ عَلَىٰ حُسْنِ بَلائِكَ
wa laka alhamdu `ala husni bala'ika
To You belongs praise for Your good trial
وَسُبُوغِ نَعْمائِكَ
wa subooghi naa'-maaa-ika
and the lavishness of Your favours,
حَمْداً يُوافِقُ رِضاكَ،
h'am-day-yuwafiqu riz''aaka
a praise conforming to Your good pleasure
وَيَمْتَرِي الْعَظِيمَ مِنْ بِرّ ِكَ وَنَداكَ،
wa yam-tareel-a'z'eema mim-bir-rika wa nadaaka
and attracting Your great goodness and magnanimity.
يا عَظِيمُ يا كَرِيمُ،
yaa a'z'eemu yaa kareemu
O All-mighty, O All-generous!
بِرَحْمَتِكَ يا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.
birah'-matika yaaa ar-h'amar-raah'imeen
By Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful!
