Al-Ghaashiya
The Overwhelming
**In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful** This Surah is one of the Meccan Surahs which contains mainly the following three themes: The first subject is the 'Resurrection' and the contrast between the destinies of the Good and the Evil in the 'Hereafter'. The second subject is 'Monotheism' with reference to the creation of the sky, the earth, and the mountains. Man should consider these wonderful matters as admonishments. The third subject is ‘Prophecy' and some of the duties that the Holy Prophet (S) was required to perform. On the whole, the Surah strengthens the idea for the basis of religion and faith, as well as all Meccan Surahs do.
Hal ataaka hadeesul ghaashiyah
HAS NEWS OF the Overpowering Event reached you?
Wujoohuny yawma 'izin khaashi'ah
Many faces will be contrite on that day,
'Aamilatun naasibah
Labouring, wearied out,
Taslaa naaran haamiyah
Burning in the scorching fire,
Tusqaa min 'aynin aaniyah
Given water from the boiling spring to drink.
Laisa lahum ta'aamun illaa min daree'
They will have no food except bitter thorn,
Laa yusminu wa laa yughnee min joo'
Neither nourishing nor banishing hunger.
Wujoohuny yawma 'izin naa'imah
Many faces will be joyous on that day,
Lisa'yihaa raadiyah
Well-pleased with their endeavour,
Fee jannatin 'aaliyah
In the high empyrean,
Laa tasma'u feehaa laaghiyah
Never hearing idle talk.
Feehaa 'aynun jaariyah
There is a stream of running water in it;
Feehaa sururum marfoo'ah
And within it are couches placed on high,
Wa akwaabum mawdoo 'ah
Goblets set,
Wa namaariqu masfoofah
Cushions arranged,
Wa zaraabiyyu mabsoosah
And rich carpets spread.
Afalaa yanzuroona ilalibili kaifa khuliqat
Do they not then ponder how the clouds were formed;
Wa ilas samaaa'i kaifa rufi'at
And the heavens, how it was raised high;
Wa ilal jibaali kaifa nusibat
And the mountains, how they were fixed;
Wa ilal ardi kaifa sutihat
And the earth, how it was spread out?
Fazakkir innama anta Muzakkir
Remind them; you are surely a reminder.
Lasta 'alaihim bimusaitir
You are not a warden over them,
Illaa man tawallaa wa kafar
Other than him who turns his back and denies,
Fa yu'azzibuhul laahul 'azaabal akbar
In which case he will be punished by God with the severest punishment.
Innaa ilainaaa iyaabahum
To Us is surely their returning;
Summa inna 'alainaa hisaabahum
Ours is surely then to reckon with them.
