The Night
**In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful** This Surah is a Meccan Surah and has the same qualities that other Meccan Suras have; short verses. Their contents are expressive and awakening and they are generally about the Hereafter and Divine chastisement. At the beginning, after making three oaths, the verses divide people into two groups: Those pious believers who give in charity and fear Allah; and those disbelievers who are greedy misers and think themselves self-sufficient. The fate of the first group is introduced as being in ease and happiness, and the destiny of the second group is affliction and misery. At one point in the Surah, after mentioning the fact that Allah guides His servants, the Qur'an warns all of us of a blazing fire. Then, it introduces the conduct of those who enter the fire and that of those who are kept away from it.
Wallaili izaa yaghshaa
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over,
Wannahaari izaa tajalla
And the day when it shines in all its glory,
Wa maa khalaqaz zakara wal unthaa
And Him who created the male and female,
Inna sa'yakum lashattaa
That your endeavour is for different ends.
Fa ammaa man a'taa wattaqaa
Yet he who gives to others and has fear,
Wa saddaqa bil husnaa
And affirms goodness,
Fasanu yassiruhoo lilyusraa
We shall ease the way of fortune for him.
Wa ammaa mam bakhila wastaghnaa
But he who does not give and is unconcerned,
Wa kazzaba bil husnaa
And rejects goodness,
Fasanu yassiruhoo lil'usraa
For him We shall ease the way of adversity,
Wa maa yughnee 'anhu maaluhooo izaa taraddaa
And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss).
Inna 'alainaa lal hudaa
It is indeed for Us to show the way,
Wa inna lanaa lal Aakhirata wal oolaa
And to Us belong the End and the Beginning.
Fa anzartukum naaran talazzaa
So, I warn you of the blazing Fire.
Laa yaslaahaaa illal ashqaa
No one will burn in it but the most wretched,
Allazee kazzaba wa tawallaa
Who denied (the truth) and turned away.
Wa sa yujannnabuhal atqaa
But save him who fears
Allazee yu'tee maalahoo yatazakkaa
And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue,
And is under no one's obligation to return his favour,
Illab tighaaa'a wajhi rabbihil a 'laa
Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high,
Wa lasawfa yardaa
Will surely be gratified.
