Al-Mursalaat
سُورَةُ المُرۡسَلَاتِ
The Emissaries
**In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful** This Surah belongs to the early Meccan period and its name, Mursalat is taken from the first verse. After making some oaths, the text refers to the horrors of the Hereafter for those who reject the Truth. The refrain, **“Ah woe, that Day to the Rejecters of Truth”** is repeated ten times in the Surah and every time follows a new topic. In addition to the oaths, the Surah gives some information about the fervent Hereafter and its grievous events, and then repeats the same refrain: **“Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth.”** In the second stage, we learn about the woeful story of the sinners of past generations. In the third stage, it lets us know a little about the creation’s specialities. In the fourth stage, we are informed of some divine Blessings on the Earth. In the fifth stage, there are some messages in which the rejecters are warned of their painful penalty. In every stage there is also a hint to an enlightening point and then the refrain follows. Sometimes, the blessings of just men are mentioned to show that both rewards and penalties are found, but the former is used for justification and the latter is for warning. The refrain, in this Surah, has an association with the refrain in Surah Rahman, No. 55, but with the difference that: Surah Rahman speaks about the Blessings, but Surah Mursalat describes the rejecters’ punishments.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلْمُرْسَلَٰتِ عُرْفًۭا
Wal mursalaati'urfaa
I CALL TO WITNESS those who are sent consecutively,
فَٱلْعَٰصِفَٰتِ عَصْفًۭا
Fal'aasifaati 'asfaa
And those that strike violently,
وَٱلنَّٰشِرَٰتِ نَشْرًۭا
Wannaashiraati nashraa
And those that revive by quickening,
فَٱلْفَٰرِقَٰتِ فَرْقًۭا
Falfaariqaati farqaa
And those that distinguish distinctly,
فَٱلْمُلْقِيَٰتِ ذِكْرًا
Falmulqiyaati zikra
And those that bring down the Reminder
عُذْرًا أَوْ نُذْرًا
'Uzran aw nuzraa
To end all argument or to warn.
إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَوَٰقِعٌۭ
Innamaa too'adoona lawaaqi'
What is promised will surely come to pass.
فَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ طُمِسَتْ
Fa izam nujoomu tumisat
When the stars are obliterated,
وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ فُرِجَتْ
Wa izas samaaa'u furijat
The heavens split asunder,
وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ نُسِفَتْ
Wa izal jibaalu nusifat
The mountains reduced to dust and blown away,
وَإِذَا ٱلرُّسُلُ أُقِّتَتْ
Wa izar Rusulu uqqitat
And when the time comes for raising the little girls (buried alive) --
لِأَىِّ يَوْمٍ أُجِّلَتْ
Li ayyi yawmin ujjilat
For what day is that time fixed?
لِيَوْمِ ٱلْفَصْلِ
Li yawmil Fasl
The Day of Judgement.
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ
Wa maaa adraaka maa yawmul fasl
How will you comprehend what the Day of Judgement is?
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Wailuny yawma 'izillilmukazzibeen
Alas the woe that day for those who deny!
أَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
Alam nuhlikil awwaleen
Have We not destroyed the earlier generations?
ثُمَّ نُتْبِعُهُمُ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ
Summa nutbi'uhumul aakhireen
So shall We make the later ones to follow them.
كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
Kazzlika naf'alu bilmujrimeen
That is what We shall do to those who are guilty of crime.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Wailunw yawma 'izil lil mukazzibeen
Alas the woe that day for those who deny!
أَلَمْ نَخْلُقكُّم مِّن مَّآءٍۢ مَّهِينٍۢ
Alam nakhlukkum mimmaaa'im maheen
Did We not create you from contemptible water?
فَجَعَلْنَٰهُ فِى قَرَارٍۢ مَّكِينٍ
Faja'alnaahu fee qaraarim makeen
Then We lodged you in a secure place (the womb)
إِلَىٰ قَدَرٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ
Illaa qadrim ma'loom
For a certain appointed time,
فَقَدَرْنَا فَنِعْمَ ٱلْقَٰدِرُونَ
Faqadarnaa fani'mal qaadiroon
Then We facilitated (your birth). How well do We calculate!
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Wailuny yawma 'izil lilmukazzibeen
Alas the woe that day for those who deny!
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ كِفَاتًا
Alam naj'alil arda kifaataa
Have We not made the earth a repository
أَحْيَآءًۭ وَأَمْوَٰتًۭا
Ahyaaa'anw wa amwaataa
For the living and the dead,
وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ شَٰمِخَٰتٍۢ وَأَسْقَيْنَٰكُم مَّآءًۭ فُرَاتًۭا
Wa ja'alnaa feehaa rawaasiya shaamikhaatinw wa asqainaakum maaa'an furaataa
And placed in it lofty and broad stablisers, and gave you sweet water to drink?
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Wailuny yawma 'izil lilmukazzibeen
Alas the woe that day for those who deny!
ٱنطَلِقُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ
Intaliqooo ilaa maa kuntum bihee tukazziboon
"Go to what you used to deny;
ٱنطَلِقُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ ظِلٍّۢ ذِى ثَلَٰثِ شُعَبٍۢ
Intaliqooo ilaa zillin zee salaasi shu'ab
Go to the shadow with three ramifications,
لَّا ظَلِيلٍۢ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهَبِ
Laa zaleelinw wa laa yughnee minal lahab
Neither shady nor protecting against the blazing Fire.
إِنَّهَا تَرْمِى بِشَرَرٍۢ كَٱلْقَصْرِ
Innahaa tarmee bishararin kalqasr
It will throw out sparks as logs of wood
كَأَنَّهُۥ جِمَٰلَتٌۭ صُفْرٌۭ
Ka annahoo jimaalatun sufr
So like golden camels."
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Wailuny yawma 'izil lilmukazibeen
Alas the woe that day for those who deny!
هَٰذَا يَوْمُ لَا يَنطِقُونَ
Haazaa yawmu laa uantiqoon
They will not be able to speak that day,
وَلَا يُؤْذَنُ لَهُمْ فَيَعْتَذِرُونَ
Wa laa yu'zanu lahum fa ya'taziroon
Nor given leave to make excuses.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Wailunw yawma 'izil lilmukazzibeen
Alas the woe that day for those who deny!
هَٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ۖ جَمَعْنَٰكُمْ وَٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
Haaza yawmul fasli jama 'naakum wal awwaleen
That will be the Day of Reckoning. Gathered will be (you) and the earlier (generations).
فَإِن كَانَ لَكُمْ كَيْدٌۭ فَكِيدُونِ
Fa in kaana lakum kaidun fakeedoon
So if you have any plot to devise against Me, then devise it.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Wailuny yawma'izil lilmukazzibeen
Alas the woe that day for those who deny!
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى ظِلَٰلٍۢ وَعُيُونٍۢ
Innal muttaqeena fee zilaalinw wa 'uyoon
Those who take heed for themselves and fear God, will be amidst shade and springs of water,
وَفَوَٰكِهَ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ
Wa fawaakiha mimmaa yastahoon
And such fruits as they desire.
كُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ هَنِيٓـًٔۢا بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
Kuloo washraboo haneee 'am bimaa kuntum ta'maloon
"Eat and drink with relish as reward for what you had done."
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
Innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen
That is how We reward the good.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Wailuny yawma 'izil lilmuzkazzibeen
Alas the woe that day for those who deny!
كُلُوا۟ وَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ قَلِيلًا إِنَّكُم مُّجْرِمُونَ
Kuloo wa tamatta'oo qaleelan innakum mujrimoon
Eat and enjoy for a while: You are certainly sinners.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Wailunny yawma 'izil lilmukazzibeen
Alas the woe that day for those who deny!
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱرْكَعُوا۟ لَا يَرْكَعُونَ
Wa izaa qeela lahumur ka'oo aa yarka'oon
When it is said to them: "Bow in homage," they do not bow.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Wailunny yawma 'izil lilmukazzibeen
Alas the woe that day for those who deny!
فَبِأَىِّ حَدِيثٍۭ بَعْدَهُۥ يُؤْمِنُونَ
Fabi ayyi hadeesim ba'dahoo yu'minoon
In what other lore after this will they then believe?
