Al-Qaari'a

The Calamity

**In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful** This Surah, on the whole, describes the Resurrection Day and its preliminary events. The style is alarming and awakening with some clear warnings. According to this Surah, people are divided into two definite groups: Those whose good deeds weigh heavy by the Divine Scales will rejoice in a pleasant life; and those whose good deeds weigh light will have the abyss as their abode. The name of the Surah, Al-Qariah, is taken from the first verse.

    Al qaari'ah

    THE STARTLING CALAMITY.

    Mal qaariah

    What is the startling calamity?

    Wa maa adraaka mal qaari'ah

How will you comprehend what the startling calamity is? --

Yauma ya koonun naasu kal farashil mabthooth

A Day on which human beings would be like so many scattered moths,

Wa ta koonul jibalu kal 'ihnil manfoosh

The mountains like the tufts of carded wool.

    Fa-amma man thaqulat mawa zeenuh

Then he whose deeds shall weigh heavier in the scale

    Fahuwa fee 'ishatir raadiyah

    Will have a tranquil life;

Wa amma man khaffat mawa zeenuh

But he whose deeds are lighter in the balance

    Fa-ummuhu haawiyah

Will have the Abyss for abode.

    Wa maa adraaka maa hiyah

How will you comprehend what that is?

    Naarun hamiyah

    It is the scorching fire.
