The Resurrection
**In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful** The blessed Chapter, revealed in Mecca, has forty Verses. The designation of the Chapter, denoting Resurrection, derives from the opening Verse. The Chapter, as reflected in its title, mainly treats of the Day of Resurrection. It opens with an enumeration of the harsh and frightening incidents to occur at the end of the world and proceeds to make mention of the happy and sad appearances of the good and evil doers. Further, the blessed Chapter deals with the states of mankind in the throes of death, the creation of man from a drop of semen as a token of Divine Omnipotence in recreating him. It is noteworthy that four Verses in the middle of the Chapter treat of the manner of Revelation and recitation of the Holy Qur’an. According to the traditions, one who perseveres in the recitation of the blessed Chapter and acts upon it shall be able to happily and smilingly cross the Bridge Spanning Hellfire (sirat).
Laaa uqsimu bi yawmil qiyaamah
I CALL TO WITNESS the Day of Resurrection,
Wa laaa uqsimu bin nafsil lawwaamah
And I call the reprehensive soul to witness:
Ayahsabul insaanu al lan najm'a 'izaamah
Does man think We shall not put his bones together?
Balaa qaadireena 'alaaa an nusawwiya banaanah
Surely We are able to reform even his finger-tips.
Bal yureedul insaanu liyafjura amaamah
Yet man is sceptical of what is right before him.
Yas'alu ayyyaana yawmul qiyaamah
He asks: "When will the Day of Resurrection be?"
Fa izaa bariqal basar
Yet when the eyes are dazzled,
We khasafal qamar
The moon eclipsed,
Wa jumi'ash shamusu wal qamar
And the sun and moon are conjoined,
Yaqoolul insaanu yaw ma 'izin aynal mafarr
That day man will say: "Where can I find escape?"
Kallaa laa wazar
Never so, for there will be no escape.
Ilaa rabbika yawma 'izinil mustaqarr
With your Lord alone will be the retreat on that day.
Yunabba 'ul insaanu yawma 'izim bimaa qaddama wa akhkhar
Then man will be told what he had sent ahead (of good) and what he had left behind.
Balil insaanu 'alaa nafsihee baseerah
In fact man is a witness against himself,
Wa law alqaa ma'aazeerah
Whatever the excuses he may offer.
Laa tuharrik bihee lisaa naka lita'jala bih
Do not forestall (the revelation before its completion) by acting in haste.
Inna 'alainaa jam'ahoo wa qur aanah
Surely its collection and recitation are Our responsibility.
Fa izaa qaraanaahu fattabi' qur aanah
So, as We recite it, follow its reading.
Summa inna 'alainaa bayaanah
The exposition of its meaning surely rests on Us.
Kallaa bal tuhibboonal 'aajilah
But no. You love this transient life,
Wa tazaroonal Aakhirah
And neglect the Hereafter.
Wujoohuny yawma 'izin naadirah
How many faces will be refulgent on that Day,
Ilaa rabbihaa naazirah
Waiting for their Lord.
Wa wujoohuny yawma 'izim baasirah
And how many faces on that Day will be woe-begone
Tazunnu any yuf'ala bihaa faaqirah
Fearing that a great disaster is going to befall them.
Kallaaa izaa balaghatit taraaqee
Never so, for when life withdraws into the clavicula,
Wa qeela man raaq
And it is asked: "Is there any reciter of charms and amulets?"
Wa zanna annahul firaaq
He will then realise it is the parting,
Waltaffatis saaqu bissaaq
And anguish will be heaped upon anguish:
Ilaa rabbika yawma'izinil masaaq
To your Lord then will be the driving.
Falaa saddaqa wa laa sallaa
For he neither believed nor prayed,
Wa laakin kazzaba wa tawalla
But only disavowed and turned away;
Summa zahaba ilaaa ahlihee yatamatta
Then he strutted back to his people.
Awlaa laka fa awlaa
Alas the woe for you, alas!
Summa awlaa laka fa awla
Alas, the woe for you!
Ayahsabul insaanu anyytraka sudaa
Does man think that he will be left alone to himself, free?
Alam yaku nutfatam mim maniyyiny yumnaa
Was he not an emitted drop of semen,
Summa kaana 'alaqata fakhalaq fasawwaa
Then formed into an embryo? Then He fashioned, shaped and proportioned
Faja'ala minhuz zawjayniz zakara wal unsaa
And assigned it sexes, male and female.
Alaisa zaalika biqaadirin 'alaaa any yuhyiyal mawtaa
Cannot such as He bring the dead to life?
