An-Naba
The Announcement
**In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful** Most of the verses of the last part of the Qur’an were revealed in Mecca. The nature of these Surahs is that they put emphasis on the Creation and the Resurrection, furnished with glad tidings and warnings; usually in a shocking and awakening tone. All the verses of the Surahs, except a few, are short and full of implications. For the same reason, they affect, deeply, on any conscious person and they awaken some of the unaware, too. They give spirit to dead‑like people and make the indifferent ones feel responsibility. On the whole, they have a specific case and an enthusiastic world of their own, full of enlightenment and attraction. Surah Nabaa is not an exception to this general principle. It begins with an awakening question, and ends with a wonderful sentence full of warning. The contents of the Surah can be divided into several parts: The question that is stated in the first verse about the **“Great News” /naba’-in-`ażim/** or the Hereafter. Examples of the types of Divine Power in the Heavens and on Earth, and also of men’s lives and their gifts as evidences to the possibility of the Resurrection and the Hereafter. Preliminary signs of the Resurrection. Reference to the painful chastisement of the transgressors. The encouraging gifts and blessings of Heaven. Finally, the Surah ends with some intensive warnings about the dreadful punishment, and then, the sad destiny of the Unbelievers. The name of the Surah, Nabaa, is taken from its second verse, but sometimes it is called /’amma/ which is the first word in the first verse.
'Amma Yatasaa-aloon
OF WHAT ARE they asking one another?
'Anin-nabaa-il 'azeem
(Is it) of the great announcement
Allazi hum feehi mukh talifoon
About which they have been differing?
Kallaa sa y'alamoon
Indeed they will come to know soon;
Thumma kallaa sa y'alamoon
They will indeed come to know soon.
Alam naj'alil arda mihaa da
Did We not make the earth a spreading,
Wal jibaala au taada
The mountains tent-pins?
Wa khalaq naakum azwaaja
We created you in pairs,
Waja'alnan naumakum subata
And made sleep for you to rest,
Waja'alnal laila libasa
The night a covering,
Waja'alnan nahara ma 'aasha
And the day for seeking livelihood.
Wa banaina fauqakum sab 'an shi daada
We raised over you several secure (skies),
Waja'alna siraajaw wah haaja
And placed a lamp therein brightly burning.
Wa anzalna minal m'usiraati maa-an saj-jaaja
And We sent down rain from water-laden clouds pouring in torrents
Linukh rija bihee habbaw wana baata
That We may produce from it grain and vegetation,
Wa jan naatin alfafa
And orchards full of trees and interlacing boughs.
Inna yaumal-fasli kana miqaata
Surely a time is fixed for the Day of Judgement.
Yauma yun fakhu fis-soori fataa toona afwaaja
The day the trumpet blast is sounded you will come in hordes;
Wa futiha tis samaa-u fakaanat abwaaba
The heavens will be opened wide and turn into so many doors,
Wa suyyi raatil jibaalu fa kaanat saraaba
The mountains put in motion turning into a mirage.
Inna jahan nama kaanat mirsaada
Certainly Hell lies in wait,
Lit taa gheena ma aaba
The rebels' abode,
Laa bitheena feehaa ahqaaba
Where they will remain for aeons,
Laa ya zooqoona feeha bar daw walaa sharaaba
Finding neither sleep nor any thing to drink
Illa hamee maw-wa ghas saaqa
Except boiling water and benumbing cold:
Jazaa-aw wi faaqa
, A fitting reward.
Innahum kaanu laa yarjoona hisaaba
They were those who did not expect a reckoning,
Wa kazzabu bi aayaa tina kizzaba
And rejected Our signs as lies.
Wa kulla shai-in ahsai naahu kitaa ba
We have kept account of everything in a book.
Fa zooqoo falan-nazee dakum ill-laa azaaba
So taste (the fruit of what you sowed), for We shall add nothing but torment,
Inna lil mutta qeena mafaaza
As for those who preserve themselves from evil and follow the straight path, there is attainment for them:
Hadaa-iqa wa a'anaa ba
Orchards and vineyards,
Wa kaawa 'iba at raaba
And graceful maidens of the same age,
Wa ka'san di haaqa
And flasks full and flowing.
Laa yasma'oona fiha lagh waw walaa kizzaba
They will hear no blasphemies there or disavowals:
Jazaa-am mir-rabbika ataa-an hisaaba
A recompense from your Lord, a sufficient gift,
Rabbis samaa waati wal ardi wa maa baina humar rahmaani laa yam likoona minhu khi taaba
The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that lies between them, most benevolent, to whom none may dare address a word.
Yauma yaqoo mur roohu wal malaa-ikatu saf-fal laa yata kalla moona illa man azina lahur rahmaanu wa qaala sawaaba
The day the Spirit takes its stand, with the angels ranged in rows. None will speak except who is permitted by Ar-Rahman and says what is right.
Zaalikal yaumul haqqu faman shaa-at ta khaaza ill-laa rabbihi ma-aaba
That day is certain. So whosoever likes may prepare a way to his Lord.
In naa anzar naakum azaaban qareebaiy-yauma yan zurul marr-u maa qaddamat yadaahu wa ya qoolul-kaafiru yaa lai tanee kuntu turaaba
We have indeed warned you of a calamity near at hand, a day when man will see what he had sent (of his deeds) ahead, and the unbeliever will say: "Woe alas. Ah would that I were dust!"
